Antares Charts

Hi, I have recently returned from Scotland where I was sailing around the Firth of Lorne and Jura. I decided to buy the Antares charts and am pleased with what I can see but there are some charts in the collection that won't display. For example if I search for "chart selector, I only get numbers 6 and 9 despite being able to see that the files have downloaded to the files folder on my iPad ( which is located in the Angel Nav folder in files ). While the link was valid, I did another download to a folder on my iPad which has both BSB and KAP files in it but when I point to this folder in the settings on Angel Nav, I still don't have some charts. This folder has 1528 items and the Angel Nav folder has 765 items.
I was using marina wifi at the time but didn't get any error messages about the download.
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Philip,

Glad to hear you have the Antares charts which are really excellent. I also have a set which I have just loaded into AngelNav for testing.

Like you, I only have two Chart selectors (6 and 9), whereas there were the full 9 in my 2024 set. The named files are present in the Files app, so at this stage I am not sure why they are not being imported into AngelNav.

The other issue is the number of charts in your AngelNav folder. The original download will produce 1528 files, but the BSB format charts always comes with two files for each chart, and most navigation programs (including AngelNav) ignore the .bsb file. Therefore my folder has 764 individual .kap files in it since I have deleted the .bsb files.

If you used the 'Wizard' built into AngelNav to download the Antares charts originally, it doesn't save the .bsb files which would explain (almost) why you have 765 files in the folder. The 'almost' is because you have one more file than I expect!. Can you have a look at the folder using the Files app and see if you can identify an additional file (probably won't be a .kap file)?

I will get back to you once I have worked out what is going on with the selector charts.

Hi Bill,
Somehow I had managed to copy over a second folder into the Angel nav chart folder. I now have the correct number of files
AC 5612H is another chart I am missing in the app. It doesn’t even show using the chart finder icon in the map. This is Craobh Haven which was where I was based. The neighbouring chart is there - Eileen Buidhe Bay
AC 5617B is another that is missing and AC 5613B Asknish Bay and AC 5600C Lussa Bay.
Hopefully these files may have something in common
Also have been reading about MMFA download and they say it is important to point the map within the app at the West Coast of Scotland before beginning download. Could it be similar for Angel Nav?

Hi Philip,

Great, that explains the disparity, and I am glad to say I now have a diagnosis and a fix.

Here is the diagnosis (skip ahead for the fix!). The way AngelNav handles stored charts is to look for charts in the folder you specify, and store a thumbnail and a reference to each. Then every time it runs, it checks for changes (so if you add a new file to the folder it will appear in the chart list).

Apple is very strong on security and developers have to go through a number of hoops to be able to read files in a folder on your iPad. At some stage they have changed one of the hoops and there is now a memory limit which is triggered after processing only 340 files! Re-running AngelNav doesn't help because the folder has not changed.

I will produce a permanent fix for the next version, but in the meantime the following sequence of actions will fix it (just tested successfully on my iPad):

In AngelNav: Settings: Charts, tap the x button which will clear the folder. Your Antares charts will disappear from the chart list:
Tap Browse and re-select the folder containing the charts.
Wait at least 2 minutes for the 340 files to load, then confirm that you only have 2 of the selector charts
Quit AngelNav and go to the Files app
Browse to the folder containing the charts and alter it in some way (quickest is to add an empty folder to it)
Run AngelNav again and wait at least 2 minutes for the next 340 to load. The confirm you have more selector charts.
Repeat the previous 3 steps (but delete the folder you just added) once more to load the final 84 charts
Confirm that you now have 9 selector charts in the list, and the chart selector should look like the attached photo

Let me know how this goes and I will start work on a permanent fix!
