If you have an iPad without a built in GPS (ie a WiFi only model) and you also have an iPhone, there is a way of using the built in GPS in the iPhone to deliver your position to AngelNav.
Its a bit of a palaver to set up, but once done works well. You need to download a free app called GPS2IP Lite on your iPhone, and have AngelNav on your iPad. Then do the following:
Preliminaries:
- Set up your iPhone as a personal hotspot (Settings: Personal Hotspot)
- Connect your iPad’s wifi to the personal hotspot
- Get the IP address of the iPad (Settings: WiFi: (i)) and make a note of it
On the iPhone
- Run GPS2IP on the iPhone, go to Settings, and make sure the ‘Protocol Type’ is set to ‘NMEA’
- Scroll down the same page and select ‘UDP Push', and tap the gear lever symbol next to it
- In the next screen enter the IP address of your iPad (noted earlier) and leave the port number as it is (probably 11123). Make a note of this number.
- Go back to the main screen (tap Done and Done)
- Tap Enable GPS2IP Lite at the top of the screen and you should see the number by 'Rx' increment about once a second.
On the iPad
- Run AngelNav
- Go to Settings: Navigational Data and select NMEA as the data source
- Edit the port number to be the same as noted earlier (probably 11123)
- Make sure the socket protocol is UDP and the Host is 0.0.0.0
- Tap the ‘Connected' button (you may need to turn it off and on)
At this point you should see the GPS activity light flashing green every second or so as it receives a GPS message from the iPhone
Go to Charts and you should see the blue boat on the chart marking your position!
